One of the better things about living in a country with four seasons, is that with each season, there's lots of things to look forward to and events to enjoy. In Japan, summer is almost synanymous to Hanabi (or fireworks display), and they take hanabi seriously over here. Most men and women dress up in traditional Japanese gown called kimono or yukata. The gown itself is very complicated to wear and even for most Japanese women, the feat is hardly for one person to accomplish. T insisted that I go to a proper beauty parlor where they charge you for a fee and dress you up. I went to Neolive beauty parlor, located in Ochanomizu. I had my hair done too, so I get the Summer Promo. People anticipate a lively (and really crowded) event where festivals are celebrated the whole day, with stores on the sides, people buzzing about some flea markets, free taste tests, and the like. The event's highlight is the evening display of fireworks, a spectacle that everyone enjoys for free (most of the time). Hanabi is really a fun event but the downside is you'll probably get blisters if you opt to fully dress up to the toes (that is- if you decide to use the traditional kimono sandals). So a word to the wise ~ walk in very comfortable sandals or even slippers, and you'll be able to taste lots of traditonal Japanese fingerfoods, even drink a couple glass of sake, Asahi or Kirin beer, and look up to the sky to see the dazzling fireworks that will make your summer really very memorable.
