Shallow

One of the reasons I recently don't watch local TV anymore is that I am reminded of the shallowness of many Japanese. This morning, Mezamashi Terebi did a feature story about which 'Girl' (coloquial used to call a young girl who dresses up big blonde wig, puts on heavy make up, thick eyelashes extensions and usually dresses in very eyecatching clothes like those usually of cosplays or costume plays) is more popular with guys - a White Girl or a Tanned Girl. They did surveys from passersby and at the end they used elementary girls to vote which 'girl' they would want to be when they grow up. A pretty close call, but the white one won.
I don't usually express strong opinions of what I see and observe around me but this morning that survey just disgusted me. It patronizes 'fakeness', a very shallow approach to being popular and it doesn't teach anything about good behavior instead the feature story promotes to looking after your appearances and encourages young girls to emulate the same when they grow up.
I entered the fashion industry because I believe that fashion is an art, a medium that allows each of us to express ourselves, to be who we are, but not to obsess on 'looking hilarious' without reason. I never heard a single word about self expression, even in the way the reporter closed her feature story. I am saddened. No, I'm angry at how this society is forgeting the more valuable things in life. And instead is opting to be shallow.
